Its authentic mountain village, Saint-Lary Village, sits at an elevation of 830 meters, characterized by charming stone and half-timbered houses that exude a distinct Pyrenean identity and a lively Southwestern ambiance. Even in the 19th century, Saint-Lary was a popular holiday destination, building a long-standing tradition as a spa town where guests sought treatment for respiratory and rheumatic complaints for over a century. This heritage continues today with relaxing spa facilities available to visitors. The village itself is compact and easily explorable on foot, with its main street, Rue Vincent Mir, hosting a variety of shops, restaurants, and café terraces that remain bustling even in winter. For added convenience, a free shuttle bus operates regularly during winter, providing easy access to different parts of the village. Its strategic location near the Spanish border also lends a touch of cross-border culture and exoticism, enriching the visitor experience. Beyond its winter appeal, Saint-Lary is a dual-season destination, attracting hikers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts in the warmer months, underscoring its diverse appeal. The town proudly balances its traditional roots with its status as a modern, family-friendly resort, a commitment highlighted by its "Famille Plus" label, ensuring a wide range of activities and amenities for all ages. Visitors can delve into the local history and cultural heritage of the Aure Valley at the Maison du Patrimoine, an interpretation center and museum in the village.
An Expansive Ski Area for Every Level
Saint-Lary boasts one of the largest and most diverse ski areas in the Pyrenees, offering over 100 kilometers of pistes to explore. The ski area extends across three complementary sectors – Pla d'Adet, Espiaube, and Vallon du Portet – providing a wealth of varied terrain from 1650 meters up to an impressive 2,515 meters in altitude. This diverse landscape, ranging from high mountain expanses to enchanting forest runs, ensures excellent skiing conditions across most weather scenarios. The original Saint-Lary Village, at 830 meters, offers convenient access to these higher ski stations via gondola and cable car, with the Saint-Lary 1700 / Pla d'Adet station reachable in just 8 minutes.
The Pla d'Adet sector, situated at 1,700 meters, is widely recognized as an ideal starting point for families and beginners. It features welcoming green pistes, a covered magic carpet, and dedicated fun areas, allowing novices and young children to comfortably discover the joys of skiing and snowboarding at their own pace. For the youngest learners, the ESF Piou-Piou Club provides supervised instruction from qualified ski instructors.
Intermediate and advanced skiers will find ample opportunities to challenge themselves across the Espiaube and Vallon du Portet sectors. Espiaube, located at an altitude of 1,900 meters or extending to 2,350 meters depending on the specific area, offers a variety of colorful slopes with breathtaking views, including the Aulon Regional Nature Reserve. It features longer and more challenging runs, such as the renowned Mirabelle piste, which boasts a 700-meter vertical drop over its 3.6-kilometer length, making it one of the longest in the Pyrenees. The highest slope area, Vallon du Portet, reaching up to 2,400 meters, provides exceptional panoramic views of the "Pyrénées Sauvages" and is also a prime spot for enjoying mountain delicacies on a sunny terrace. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, this sector, along with others, offers exciting freeride opportunities, mogul stadiums, and slalom areas. Additionally, a dedicated snowpark caters to freestyle enthusiasts. With approximately 59 pistes and around twenty ski lifts across the entire domain, coupled with significant investment in snow cannons, Saint-Lary ensures reliable and enjoyable snow conditions for a substantial portion of the season.
